Can you tell me some general facts about the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
The 2008 Decatur Arts Festival is an annual, award-winning celebration of the arts in Decatur, Georgia. The festival is in its 20th year, and takes place during Memorial Day weekend (May 24 and 25, 2008.) During this time, a large, outdoor, juried artist market turns downtown Decatur and the Old Courthouse Square into a hub of activity, attracting an estimated 70,000 visitors over the two days. Other attractions include a musical stage, a children's area, the Literary Arts tent, artist demonstrations, and the concurrent Decatur Film Festival, Decatur Fine Arts Exhibition, and the Friday night Speak...Easy.
How can I apply for the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
We only accept applications for the Arts Festival online, through www.zapplication.org. ZAPP is an electronic application system designed specifically for artists to enter art shows, fairs, and festivals.
What are the steps for applying to the festival?
If you haven't used ZAPP to apply for a show before, you will first have to register. To register, click on the "New Users Register Here" button on the ZAPP website. Then, you will be prompted to enter a username and password, as well as your contact information. You only have to register once to enter many regional and national shows.
After you register, find the application for the Decatur Arts Festival by clicking on the "Participating Shows" button. The electronic application has spaces for you to answer questions about yourself and the festival, and gives you the opportunity to submit an artist statement.
In addition to entering this information, you must upload four digital images to complete your application. Three of these images should be of your work, and one must be a "booth shot," in other words, an image of your booth, tent, or display the way it will look at our festival if you are selected to participate. These images must be uploaded in JPEG format, and the ZAPP system specifies that their dimensions must be 1290 x 1290 pixels.
The application fee for the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival is $30.00. This fee is payable either by credit card through ZAPP's secure payment system, or by check, which should be made out to the Decatur Arts Alliance and mailed to us at P.O. Box 401, Decatur, Georgia, 30031. If you choose to pay by check, be aware that your application will not be processed immediately, but only after we
receive
your check.
How do I make digital images of my work, and how do I prepare my images for uploading to ZAPP?
The
recommended
way to obtain digital images for jurying is to photograph your work with a digital camera. Do not use a camera below 3.2 mega pixels; 4 or 5 mega pixels is best. It is also possible to digitally scan preexisting photographs or slides; many photo-processing centers offer this service.
To upload your files to ZAPP, your image dimensions must be exactly 1920 x 1920 pixels square. This size specification is to ensure fairness in the jurying process. However, the images that you obtain from your digital camera will likely be larger than this size, and
rectangular, not square, in proportion. You can easily resize your images, but to achieve the proper dimensions we
recommend
that you mask the two shorter sides of your image with black. For more clarification on the size specifications, and further instructions on preparing your images, follow this link to the ZAPP website.
You may choose to prepare your images yourself using photo-editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, or freeware, like The Gimp. You may also choose to entrust your image editing to a professional photographer. The ZAPP website includes a list of digital imaging resources; these services are generally inexpensive.
When is the deadline for applications?
The deadline for applications to the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival is January 15, 2008.
When will I know if I have been selected for the Decatur Arts Festival?
Soon after our final jury date of January 24, 2008, you will be notified of whether you have been selected for the festival.
Why was I not selected for the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
The Decatur Arts Festival is a very popular event, and we try to
accommodate
as many artists as possible into our juried artist market. However, the festival attracts many applicants, and our space is limited, forcing us to turn away many talented and qualified artists. In order to create a more diverse festival, the jurying process takes into account the media of work produced by the applicants, and some categories are more
competitive, based on the amount of applications we typically
receive. Keep in mind that the judging process is completely subjective, and the aim of the jury is to create the best festival possible each year. If you aren't offered a spot this year, we encourage you to apply to the 2009 Decatur Arts Festival, or one of the other events we produce during the year.
Is there a wait list for the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
There is a wait list for the festival. If you are not selected for the Decatur Arts Festival, you will be notified as to whether you have been added to the wait list.
How much is the booth fee for the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
If you are selected for the festival, you will be asked to make a statement of commitment, along with a check for $250.00 made out to the Decatur Arts Alliance to secure your booth space.
I am a gallery artist. How can I participate in the 2008 Decatur Arts Festival?
