Carmen Deedy
7 pm • Decatur Library
A native of Cuba raised in Decatur, Deedy is a nationally known author and storyteller. She has appeared at the White House and the Kennedy Center and is heard regularly on National Public Radio. Her prize-winning books include The Library Dragon, Agatha's Feather Bed and The Last Dance.

The popular syndicated columnist, humorist and critic lives in Perry, Ga. His books include Journey of a Gentle Southern Man, Chances and Choices and most recently Halfway Home: the Journey Continues (Mercer University Press).

River of Words
Exhibit on the first floor of the Decatur Library
Coordinated by the Georgia Center for the Book and Project WET (Water Education for Teachers), River of Words is an international poetry and art project. More than 20,000 entries were submitted nationally in 2004, and more than 3,000 of those came from Georgia. Students are invited to create art or poetry that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of the natural environment. Georgia has produced at least one national grandprize winner in each of the seven years of the programs existence.

11-11:45 am • Creative Writing Class Readings
This new feature of the Literary Arts Festival highlights the writings of local high schools. This year we feature the juniors and seniors of the Creative Writing class of Decatur High School, under the direction of Cara Cassell of the DHS English department. Participating students are Bemene Baadom-Piaro, Lauren Goldston, Brittany Harris, Vickie Lane, and Michael Nunes. Copies of the 2005 DHS Literary Magazine Three-Thirty-Two will be available for $4 during the reading.
12-12:45 pm • Kids Can Act!
Working Title Playwrights presents a workshop for children (ages 8-15). Each participating child will read a role in one of two specially written plays, learn about creating a character and have a wonderful time! Coordinated by childrens theatre veteran Susie Spear Purcell, the workshop will feature theatre games and lots of fun as the children learn some acting basics. Ms. Purcell has been acting and teaching in theatre, film and television for the past 15 years.
1-1:45 pm • Theatre for the Family
Working Title Playwrights presents readings of two short, award-winning plays: Mary Miller's Ferris Wheel, a love story of two lonely people who are forced to ride together on an old country Ferris wheel; and Christmas in July, by Hank Kimmel, the story of a visitor who appears as a family is preparing for a special outing. Directed by WTP Artistic Director Kirsten Eidsmoe, these warm-spirited, gently comic works will appeal to everyone.

The Grand Expedition
Come along on this exciting trek through the jungle guided by Begonia Bumble Blossom, a bubbly British botanist from Buckingham Palace! Join Begonia and her menagerie of jungle animals as she searches for a mysterious bumblebee. Be ready to participate!

Evelyn Coleman
Ms. Coleman has written 11 books for children, including White Socks Only, The Riches of Osceola McCarty, Mystery of the Dark Tower and Circle of Fire. She will share stories and talk about what its like to be a writer.
2 pm • Meet Corduroy
Have your picture taken with Corduroy, that lovable toy bear from Don Freemans classic picture book. Limited to the first 75 children.
3 pm • John Joyner: Cowboy Poetry
and Music
Join cowboy poet John Joyner for cowboy poetry and song. Joyner spent his early childhood in Lewiston, Mont., and has participated in cowboy poetry gatherings in Cartersville, Ga., and in the Montana towns of Lewiston, Missoula and Miles City. John will join up with Kristin Markiton, singer with Delta Moon, who will release a CD of her own this spring.
